Ernst Erb, founder and president of the Foundation Radiomuseum Lucerne, received the prestigious Sigillum Magnum on October 22, 2018, the highest honor awarded by the University of Bologna. This distinction was conferred on him by Prof. Dr. Claudio Melchiorri during an academic ceremony held in the Aula Magna at the School of Engineering and Architecture at the University of Bologna. Prof. Emeritus Dr. Roberto Guidorzi had held the Laudatio.
Professor Melchiorri is Head of Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Information Engineering "Guglielmo Marconi" amd acted for the dean, Professor Dr. Ezio Mesini who had unexpectedly to be present in Rome.
Established in 1999, the website radiomuseum.org has become the world’s largest collection of tube radios, transistor radios, and tubes as well as the most complete reference system for old time radios and similar objects. At the start, Ernest Erb uploaded most of the content from his book "Radios von gestern" (Radios from yesterday) from 1989 and all of the content from his two radio catalogs. He has actively worked on the website for 20 years and also designed and financed the programming by himself.
With over 17'000 members from more than 90 countries, the Foundation shares extensive data on more than 300'000 old time radios and over two million pictures, including more than 800'000 printable schematic diagrams. The schematic diagrams can be downloaded for free by both guests and members.
These at least over 300-man years of work that was necessary to build up this extraordinary database was made possible by a close collaboration with thousands of private individuals and several institutions, to whom Ernst Erb is very grateful.
